*****PROGRAM UPDATE 6/19/23*****
Good Afternoon Crew 135!!
I hope this finds you rested and ready to rock this year's final week on the Pacific Crest Trail set to begin tomorrow 0800 with a 3 day work project out of Lake Hughes. Please note, drive time to / from the work site is approximately 1.25 hours each way daily.
About the Pacific Crest Trail
The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,650 miles (4,265 kilometers) from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. It is a National Scenic Trail. It reveals the beauty of the desert, unfolds the glaciated expanses of the Sierra Nevada, travels deep forests, and provides commanding vistas of volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range. The trail symbolizes everything there is to love—and protect—in the Western United States.
Each year, 700-800 thru hikers attempt to complete the 2,650 mile challenge, spending 4-6 months gettin er done! Due to this year's rainy winter and heavy snow pack in the high country, many chose to start late and you will likely see a few PCT backcountry pilgrims. Each has a trail name. Be sure to ask them theirs if you see them, because there's always a great story behind each! Learn more about the PCT thru hiking experience - CLICK HERE

A few safety concerns to note:
- This is a maintenance and fire restoration project rather than a full build as we did last week.
- We will be working above cloud cover with full exposure to sun and elements. Bring a good lunch, snacks for break time, and plen ty of water. 135 will carry extra water for emergency but it is YOUR responsibility to ensure you are arriving safe and prepared!
- Hazard identification and abatement strategies will be covered each morning using an approved Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). CLICK HERE to view the WS Hart Trails Program JHA.
- Due to the remoteness of this location, we will implement an additional layer of safety in the form of a Trail Communications Plan (TCP) in the event of serious, or life threatening injury that requires a trip to the hospital or EMS intervention. Each Trailboss and Student Crew Leader will be given a copy of 135's TCP. CLICK HERE to view Crew 135's TCP.
- There is cell service on site, and 911 will be our first line of defense in consort with the TCP if needed.
- As back up I will carry a USFS Fire Radio, contacting Angeles dispatch to put 135 in / out of service each wok day. This radio pings a repeater system extending our communication range to anywhere in the Angeles National Forest. It may only be used by myself or an Assistant Tralboss in the event that my personal health is compromised.
- Crew 135 will be working in close proximity to a plant known as Poodle Dog Bush, which present similar hazards to poison oak, although eaily avoided. We will teach you to identify, and offer strategies to mitigate this hazard when encountered.
- COVID-19 still remains a concern. IF YOU ARE SYMPTOMATIC OR HAVE BEEN RECENTLY EXPOSED TO COVID-19 IT MUST BE REPORTED TO ME, AND YOU MUST TEST NEGATIVE BEFORE REPORTING TO WORK.
The following details planned progression for Tuesday through Thursday this week. Crew responsibilities and transportation assignments will change daily.
