Program Service
Guest Speakers – Services include arranging for community professionals to appear and discuss career and educational options for transitioning students.
Interactive Multimedia Career Survey, Interest Inventories, Career Action Planning - This service couples interest inventory and career exploration software with web based resources used to investigate career interests and outline subsequent educational supports needed to obtain employment related transition goals.
Individualized Transition Planning – When requested, program staff work closely with the student’s education team in developing employment related transition goals and timelines.
Workforce Preparation Classes – A service where students attend workforce preparation classes. Classes may be offered on a credit basis. Emphasis is placed on practical career training activities such as interviewing, completing job applications, and interest exploration in support of community based work training.
Student Work Program – Students gain paid work experience exploring a variety of careers. Currently the department employs more than two hundred youth annually in positions ranging from administrative to forestry. Emphasis is placed on mastery of basic work ethic in a community placement of expressed interest.
Classroom Presentations - Transition training programs facilitated by Career Visions Staff in which students at the middle and high school grade levels are introduced to career education and independent living curriculum developmentally appropriate for their grade level. Using this curriculum, students are often exposed for the first time to the concepts of empowerment and self advocacy while assessing transition needs and services.
Acquisition of Legal Documents - As deemed necessary, the program may assist students and their families in securing legal documentation needed for work. Most common include: work permits; birth certificate; social security card; California ID; provisional and/or Class “C” driver’s license; and in special circumstances, procurement of a work visa.
Other Transition Services - Additional transition services may include assisting students with: opening a savings account; organization of a formal school to work transition portfolio; and procurement of bus pass and student I. D. In addition, Career Visions sponsors students in: skills development at local occupational centers; community colleges, and the Armed Services.
Department of Rehabilitation – Transition Partnership Program. The Career Visions Program works closely with the educational planning team and Counselors from the Department of Rehabilitation to offer students with disabilities career development and job training support, in addition to community placement services.
Job Shadowing – The department arranges and sponsors students in community based Job Shadowing as needed. Utilizing this service, students are able to participate in career exploration in a professional work environment of interest.
Work Based Learning - Career Visions currently sponsors work based learning in a cooperative effort with local employers throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.
Counseling and Job Coaching – The Career Visions Team is available for counseling on work related issues to any student. In addition departmental representatives attend case conferences and staff meetings; facilitate in-services; and provide recommendations at IEP meetings related to transitional matters. Community
Job Development – The department currently maintains a contractual collaborative with the Department of Rehabilitation and WorkAbility I, offering community job placement and direct hire support for up to two years after graduation.
